Inland Seas Cruise, St Lawrence Seaway The official opening ceremony was held at Seaway's Montreal entrance, just east of St. Lambert Lock, on June 26, 1959. Principals at dedication were: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; President Dwight D. Eisenhower. There were 50,000 spectators and 5,000 official guests from Canada and U.S. The Queen and President Eisenhower delivered major addresses at 1/2 hour ceremony. Following the ceremonies, the Queen and President boarded the Britannia and passed through specially constructed ceremonial gates spanning the approach to St. Lambert Lock -- marking the symbolic opening of the waterway. |
